Quick catch-up

Been a while, eh? My last post, waaaay back in November of 2020, was about my decision to go back to school to get a degree. I had quit my job and moved to Japan that Fall to begin a bachelor’s + master’s Computer Science program. Well, here we are mid-2022, and I am no longer living or going to school in Japan. Long story short, halfway through the first year, multiple and major bureaucratic issues with the university made me question continuing my education there. Despite some amazing help from friends finding me solutions and workarounds to some of those hurdles, I ultimately opted to transfer out and finish my degree in the US.

My decision came too late to apply to a four-year university, so I enrolled at a community college in Los Angeles – something I realized later was the better option anyway. Another benefit to switching to school in the US was the option to add on a second bachelor’s degree – not possible at my university in Japan. The community college also had asynchronous, online classes for every course I wanted. So, with a few exceptions, I could do the work completely on my own schedule. This meant I didn’t need to live in LA full time, and I decided to make the world my home for a while.

Since officially moving out of Japan last Fall, I went back to the US for a while, brought Max with me to Spain, came back to the US, then left Max in California to spend most of my Spring and Summer in South Korea and Singapore, with a quick hop over to South Africa. I’m writing this from Seoul but heading back to the US later this month.

So, yeah, keeping theme with the past three years of my life, a lot has changed. And for all the shifts in perspective I had in 2019 and 2020, I have plenty of new and significant ones from 2021 and 2022.

I’ll get to some of them, plus my new aim with this blog, in the next post. Until then!
